A product of East Germany during the Communist era and built by VEB Sachsennring Automobilwerk in Sachsen. Exported widely throughout the Communist bloc countries.
There have been four variant the P50 of 500cc (1957-62) the 600 1962-64 This 601 (1963-91) and the 1.1 (1990-91) with a Volkswagen four stroke 1043 cc engine.
Construction is on a steel monocoque chassis with boot lid, bonnet, bumpers and doors in Duroplast a plastic composite containing resin strengthened by wool or cotton. the car has no fuel pump so the tank is placed high in the engine compartment to allow gravity feed to the carburettor.
The original engine was only 17 kW (23 hp), but in 1969 a new version was offered with a 19.1 kW (26 hp) engine. In 1974 a Needle roller bearing was added to the connecting rod, allowing for a 50/1 lubricant to be used, in this form top speed was measured at 107 kmph (67 mph). . Through the addition of a 2-stage carburetor in 1984, reducing the fuel consumption.
By 1985 the price of a standard Trabant 601 was 8,500 marks, rising to 9,700 for the top of the range Trabant 601 Universal S Deluxe.
