Chair by Hans S. Werner cal with skill. Bearing him out, thefurniture designs which still seem bestto me in the Danish collection are thewood chairs which have as subtleshaping as bones. They demand crafts-manship of a high order in their manu-facture and thus deserve credit for help-ing to keep it alive. But the calmness characterizing thestyle, its peace, has its price. The olderart seems terribly mild, the kind thatfloats forward with the world, not fight-ing it, as most of our art does. Andwith regard to products, the dragonthat must be conquered today, Ieventually in Denmark. I wouldguess, is industrialism — mass produc-tion. It cant be slain, but must betamed; a little agony might enter here. It may have begun. Some of the new-er Danish furniture does seem to beshowing the nervous sillitv char- acter sometimes called marketability —not the wood furniture, but the steel-plastic-leather series.
